I just spent a week with Peter Follansbee while he taught the Jennie Alexander ladder back. It was so enjoyable and enlightening. Besides being an engaging teacher, Peter has a deep personal connection to Jennie, as well as other influential makers. Hearing the stories about the encounters and correspondence that led to the development and practice of chair making as we currently know it was fascinating. It really does drive home the fact that one persons pursuits can ripple down through the decades and offer so much to so many.
I’d read about hickory bark seats and sat in many, but watching the process was a highlight for me. That stuff is incredible and I don’t think anything looks quite as appropriate in the chair.
I’m sure he will return to teach this class again, we had too much fun. I’ll be sure to let you know, this isn’t a class to be missed.
